This promptuary, based upon the commonplace books of Dr. Henry Alford Alfred Nicholls, occupies the space between the following following statements: “As far as I know I am white–but I have no country really now” (Jean Rhys) and “Every plant of civilization creates a state of strict bondage” (Femand Braudel).

About Catherine Lord

Catherine Lord, Professor of Studio Art at UC Irvine, is an artist and writer who lives in Los Angeles. She is the author of The Summer of Her Baldness: A Cancer Improvisation; Son Colibri, Sa Calvitie: Miss Translation, and the co-author of Art and Queer Culture: 1885-present (forthcoming, Phaidon Press).
